Dear Adobe in Action News subscribers,
Abiquiu Horno Workshop
Adobe in Action field instructor Issac Logsdon led a group of 10 students through the process of building an horno (earth oven) this past weekend. The 3-day “Horno Design & Construction” workshop took place in Abiquiu, NM at the home of one of our recent Certificate in Adobe Construction graduates. A variety of earthbuilding techniques were used in this build:
adobe blocks and mortar were used for the oven base
a cob-like mix was used for the thermal layer of the oven dome
a light straw clay mix was used as insulation below the oven floor as well as around the oven dome
earthen plasters will be used to finish the oven once it is dry
Here are some images sent to us by the workshop host Jeremy:
Adobe in Action would like to thank all workshop participants as well as hosts Jeremy and Juliette for making this such a special event. And of course, a big thanks to Issac Logsdon for continuing to share his expertise with Adobe in Action students. We look forward to offering more horno workshops in the near future!
Jacona Owner Builder Project Updates + Volunteer Opportunity
Adobe in Action Owner Builder Support recipients Gregor & Rachel sent us an update from their adobe project in Jacona, NM. They have been making good progress on a flat roof section of the build with the installation of vigas, ceiling boards and flat roof framing. Here are some pictures of the work:
Work will continue by building up the adobe parapet wall that was started by a group of volunteers back in May. The next project support session is coming up this Saturday, August 9th from 9am to 5pm. It’s a bit short notice but we are still looking for a few volunteers to help out. Send us an e-mail at kurt@adobeinaction.org if you’d like to join the free session and gain some experience laying adobe blocks. The building site is located about 25 minutes north of Santa Fe. Adobe owner builder Paul Mallory will be leading the volunteer work.
Thanks for reading our latest news.
